Kim Won-Dong

Abstract
Purpose : This study surveyed the present condition of usage and the trend of high dose rate brachytherapy in Chungbuk National University Hospital and could provide the basic data to forecast the demand of brachytherapy in our hospital.

Materials and Methods : Patients who received high dose rate brachytherapy as a curative intent in the department of radiation oncology between October 2007 and December 2009 were analyzed retrospectively. Data on total patients number, annual patients number, age, primary site, sage, treatment applicator, treatment scheme were obtained.

Results : All of 37 patients who were treated in our hospital were female with gynecologic malignancy. Thirty six patients with uterine cervix cancer underwent intracavitary brachytherapy and one patient with endometrial cancer received brachytherapy postoperatively. Anuual patients distribution were 4 patients in 2007, 17 patients in 2008, 16 patients in 2009. In 27 cases using 3-channel, 15o tandem was used. Of 9 cases using 2-channel only, Fletcher Willliamson(FW) ovoid with bladder and rectal shielding was used in 6 cases and miniovoid without shielding in 3 cases owing to narrow vaginal vault. Cylinder was applied to one patients with stage IIIA cervix cancer to irradiate lower vagina target volume. Intraluminal therapy in esophageal cancer, endobronchial therapy in lung cancer and intraluminal therapy in bile duct cancer had not been carried out in this period.

Conclusion : In our hopital, high dose rate brachytherapy was only applied to women with gynecologic malignancy. Mostly treatment was delivered as a intracavitary radiation in the uterine cervix cancer patients. To enhance the efficiency and applicability, brachytherapy should be tried to various cancer i.e. esophageal cancer, lung cancer, bile duct cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, brain tumor.
